A FREE COMMUNITY PROGRAM

The Front Porch.

A pop-up book cart we bring to festivals, park days, libraries, church events, and senior living communities across Greater Houston. Guests pick a book, take a tote, and go on with their afternoon. Nothing on the cart is for sale.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE CART

Pick a book. Take the tote. That's the whole thing.

We roll in an hour early, set the cart, the umbrella, and the flowers, and then we hand out books for two or three hours. Every guest also gets a canvas tote with a bookmark and a short pocket guide tucked inside. There's nothing to buy, nothing to sign, and no sign-up sheet anywhere on the cart.

The shelf rotates: cozy mysteries, biography and memoir, faith and inspiration, gardening and home, cooking, history, and the classics. Large print stays stocked at every single appearance, because at most of our events it's the first thing to go.

Some hosts would rather have a treat cart than a book cart. We do that too, and we'll bring both when the crowd is big enough.

THE RULES WE HOLD OURSELVES TO

Four promises, and we don't bend them.

  1. 01

No sign-up sheet at the cart.

  2. 02

    No sales pitch, ever.

  3. 03

We come only where we're invited. Your guests' good afternoon is the whole goal.

  4. 04

The only contact information anywhere on the cart is printed on the bookmark, for the families who ask.

FOR PUBLISHERS, RETAILERS, LIBRARIES, AND COMMUNITY GIVING PROGRAMS

We're looking for books to give away.

Every book on the cart is free to whoever picks it up. We hand out somewhere between 60 and 100 books at a typical appearance, and we're building toward a cart at a community event or a senior living community about twice a month.

One thing we want to be straight about. Harbor Lane is a small for-profit senior transition company here in Houston, not a 501(c)(3). We fund the cart ourselves, we charge nobody, and donated books are given away free and never sold or traded. If your program is restricted to registered nonprofits we completely understand, and we'd rather you hear that from us now.

What we're asking for

  • Up to 100 books at a time. Large print is our first ask, then cozy mysteries, biography, faith and inspiration, gardening, cooking, history, and classics.
  • New, gently used, overstock, or returns all work.
  • We'll pick up anywhere in Greater Houston.

What happens to every book

  • Every book is given away free to whoever picks it up.
  • Nothing is sold, traded, or auctioned, and nothing requires a purchase or a sign-up.
  • Leftovers stay in rotation for the next appearance.

What you get back

  • A card on the cart naming your organization
  • A named and tagged mention in our posts before and after each event
  • Photos from the day, yours to reuse however you want
  • A short written recap after each appearance: where the cart went, how many books went home, and what people picked

DONOR QUESTIONS

Donor questions.

Want the cart at your event?

We bring everything: the cart, the umbrella, the flowers, the books, the totes, and two to three of our own people. We need a level 8 by 8 foot spot and an invitation. Setup takes an hour, teardown takes about thirty minutes, and the space is left exactly as we found it.
